Let the Bubbles Flow!  Happy New Year!!

Sparklers to Celebrate 2023!

We offer a nice range of sparkling wines to bring in the New Year:

Drappier Carte d'Or Brut, Non Vintage Champagne

The Carte d'Or cuvée is the very expression of the Drappier style. With its very high proportion of Pinot Noir (80%), one is almost tasting a Blanc de Noirs. It opens with aromas of stoned fruits such as white vineyard peach. A spicy hint announces a powerful complex palate. A vinous Champagne of lovely complexity with a characteristic note of quince jelly.

$49.95/bottle

Drappier Rosé de Saignée, Non Vintage Champagne

Drappier is one of the few Champagne Houses producing Rosé by the saignée method. Several days of maceration give this cuvée an intense color marked by the Pinot Noir.  On the nose there are hints of red fruits and violet with a lightly spiced note. Receiving only a light dosage, on the palate it is remarkably expressive and extremely fresh, with a subtle trace of licorice in the finish.

$68.95/bottle

Monthuys Pere et Fils Brut Reserve Champagne

Bright gold color with almond and citrus on the nose. Nice citrus notes with a pretty mousse. Toasty and creamy on the finish. Lovely and a great price.

$39.95 / 750 ml bottle  | $23.95 / 375 ml bottle

2018 Kenefick Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Chris's Cuvée

Located in Calistoga, Kenefick Vineyards is devoted to producing high quality Bordeaux and Rhone varietal wines, evidenced by this delicious 2018 Kenefick Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Chris’s Cuvée. Sitting on prime grape-growning land, the 125 acre vineyard has a range of microclimates and soil compositions which adds complexity to the resulting wines. The land has supported vineyards since the late 1800s. The current family winery was originally purchased by Dr. Tom Kenefick in the late 1970s from the then owner, a man who still plowed the land with a horse-drawn plow (which was included with the sale!). He spent the next 20 years replacing the Italian varietals already planted with Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. While Tom passed away in 2021, his family continues the tradition of vineyard management and quality wine making.

This featured wine is a full-bodied, complex wine that would pair well with heavier meats and even BBQue. It has lovely flavors of chocolate and tobacco, along with dark, intense black fruits with soft, but powerful tannins, and a long, velvety finish. It's really a stunning wine!

2018 DOMAINE GRAND VENEUR

COTES DU RHONE 'LES CHAMPAUVINS'

The Grand Veneur Les Champauvins has long been hailed as a great Cotes du Rhones, and a true “Insider’s Wine.” That's because it's basically a Chateauneuf du Pape. The Les Champauvins vineyard sits just 3 meters from the famed vineyards and cellars of Chateau Beaucastel. You can see how close it is on the map included on the right.

This wine comes from a site just 3 meters away from one of the great Chateauneuf producers, with the same large galets or stones that Chateauneuf du Pape is known for. These rocky, well-drained soils stress the vines to yield highly concentrated flavots in the grapes.  They also absorb heat during the day, and radiate it out at night, warming the vines and ripening the grapes. Additionally, poor soil lies beneath these rocks, further stressing the grapes in their search for nutrients and moisture. The result? Powerful, concentrated and intense flavors that are are a statement of the terroir producing them.

The blend here is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, all from old, organically farmed vineyards. Full-bodied and dense yet rich, ripe and elegant, this drinks like a $40-$50 Chateauneuf du Pape, yet is only $25.95!

This wine presents it all!  Full body, a heady bouquet of ground pepper, raspberries, cherries, and exotic spices. Classic garrigue - lavender, sage, rosemary and thyme - wraps itself around the core of fruit and provides balance and elegance. Fine tannins and an underlying minerality round out the package, making this a complete knock-out! And as well as it is drinking now, it will only get better. While it drinks well now, cellar it for a few more years for it to achieve its full potential!

The Blend:  70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, all from old, organically farmed vineyards

Production Notes: Traditional vinification in stainless steel tanks.

Barrel aged: 12 months

2019 Ilaria Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemakers Anna Mario Monticello introduce their vineyard using these words on their website:

"In vino felicitas. In wine there is happiness. There is also truth, as we have been reminded, and one of the truths in my life is to make wine. My goal is to craft unique lots that are not shy about expressing their heritage – the soil and climate in which they were grown, where that combination of great terroir and viticultural expertise merge."

It's this dedication and commitment to the winemaking process that drives the production of this truly delicious bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon!  "Deep garnet-purple colored, it skips out of the glass with lively notes of wild blueberries, black cherries and menthol, plus hints of pencil shavings and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, it has a serious structure with flirtatious, flamboyant fruit, offering plenty of layers and an earthy finish." (Wine Advocate 94 pts.)

About the Wine:

  • Varietals: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot
  • Aged 22 months in oak
  • 560 cases produced

2018 Costieres de Nimes Chateau Teulon Blanc, Rhone Valley, France

This wine is 100% Roussanne, a varietal from the northern Rhône, where it is most often blended with Marsanne to create that region's delicious white blends.  It is a white grape, named after the color of its skin when ripe, which is a reddish-gold, a color that in French is "roux".  While most plantings in France are in the Northern Rhône, it also is grown in the southern Rhône, around Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

On its own, as it is in this wine, Roussanne is quite delicious.  It can have have herbal, tea-like aromas, along with pear, meyer lemon, and even honey. It can be quite intense!

This lovely wine is from the Southern Rhone, where the warmer climate and extended ripening season brings out more tropical fruits, such as lush mango, creamed pineapple, pears, and melon. It has an exuberant and perfumed nose, with hints of marmalade, buttered citrus and orange rind.

$19.95

  • Grape Varieties: 100% Roussanne

2012 Vin Santo, Fattoria Montellori

Tuscany, Italy

Vin Santo is a very special dessert wine which originates in Tuscany, Italy. The sweet wine is produced using the 'passito' method, where harvested grapes are dried for several months in open air. After much of the juice has evaporated, concentrating the sugars and flavors, the raisin-like grapes are pressed. As would be expected, there is a very limited amount of pressed juice, leading to the preciousness of this lovely wine.

This 2012 wine from Fattoria Montellori is. made from 100% Trebbiano grapes, which are dried after harvest on rough mats until March.  They are then fermented in small barrels -- which they call Caratelli -- where it remain maturing for 5 years. It is then bottled for further aging.

It is a rich amber/gold color, with flavors of dried fruits and honey, with a perfumed nose.  Perfect with hard cheeses, sweet almond cakes, custard, almond cookies or some dried fruits. This a truly remarkable wine!

This is a limited wine, so don't hesitate to buy it today!

2020 Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Vineyard Rosé

Niederosterreich, Austria

$20.95/bottle

$10/glass at the Sidewalk Wine Bar

This lovely, crisp Rosé is produced by a very old vineyard in the Kamptal region of Austria, is in the Niederosterreich appellation, where the idyllic vineyards lie on on terraces and slopes around the valley of the river Kamp, in the Danube area.  An historic winery, it was founded in 1171 by a Cistercian monastery with ties to an order in Burgundy, leading them to focus on growing Pinot Noir, which was unusual for the region at the time.

The order managed the winery until 1995, when they turned over management to Michael Moosbrugger. Under his direction, there was a dramatic leap in quality of the wines, which has led the winery in 2019 to be acknowledged as “One of the Top 100 Wineries of the Year” by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

This region has a cool climate, and thus the wines retain a strong acid base along with some zippy fruit flavors making for great food wines. This Rosé is a blend of Pinot Noir, and two Austrian varietals – Zweigelt and St. Laurent. Both produce red wines, with Zweigelt known more for producing deep-colored, bold red wines and St. Laurent is more like a lighter Pinot Noir style.

Rosé is not considered a secondary wine at the winery, where they

are produced more as a white wine than a red. Taking of a “hands-off” approach, the goal is to allow elegant, fresh aromas and flavors, lean textures, and a solid acid base to emerge from the grapes. The wine sees no oak, but is matured in stainless steel so the wine's fresh fruits are not masked by oak flavors. Winemaker Michael approaches his role as a cellar master, and feels he is responsible for the “education” of his “pupils” (the wine!) – cautiously leading his" pupils" through the wine’s development using highly reductive methods.

This wine is perfect for our warming spring weather! A lovely pink color, it has aromas and flavors of crisp cherries, strawberries and even some raspberries. Try it with some mild brie cheese, or just by itself!

Il Rosé Di Casanova 2020

La Spinetta Vineyards, Tuscany, Italy

$20.95/bottle

$10/glass at the Sidewalk Wine Bar

Tuscan born, but inspired by the gorgeous Provencal Rosés from the South of France. The fascinating characteristics of Sangioves and Prugnolo Gentile help create a wine that shows great character, an intense aroma, and which is very pleasant to drink. It has a floral and fruity bouquet with hints of citrus and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is wonderfully fresh and delicate with satisfying minerality and an all-embracing acidity. Here's 3 simple words to sum it up- Irresistible, delicate, fresh!

The winery grew out of the expert farming in the Piedmont region of Italy by Giuseppe Rivetti, nicknamed ‘Pin’, and his wife, Lidia . It was their children in the mid 1970s who began the winery, focusing on the varietals of the region.  In 2001, they expanded their focus to Tuscany, opening a winery in that region which again, focused on native grapes of the area, which includes Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile, which is a less-know varietal that is often called Sangiovese Grosso and is primarily used in the town of Montepulciano, Tuscany.  It is thought to be a clone of Sangiovese, but many believe it is actually just another name for the same grape.

About the wine:

  • GRAPE VARIETY: 50% Sangiovese, 50% Prugnolo Gentile
  • PRODUCTION VINEYARD: Vineyards within the municipality of Terricciola (Casanova), approximately 1000' elevation
  • VINIFICATION: Destemming and soft pressing, without overstressing the berries. The must remains in brief contact with the skins in order to obtain an extremely balanced free-run juice. Alcoholic fermentation for about 10 days, followed by aging in stainless steel tanks on its lees for about 3 months.
  • 12.5% ABV
